The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council’s Sustainable Tourism Planning
and Development Laboratory is presenting Place-Making – Sustainable
Tourism Development Forum: Programs, Techniques and Practices for Your
Organization.
The half day forum is being held Thursday, October 25, starting at 8
am, followed by lunch at 12:30 pm. The event is being held at the
Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, 175 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI.
Registration for the event is $35/person and includes all materials
and lunch.
The forum is intended for Southern New England tourism practitioners,
community policy makers and shapers, educators, students of tourism,
elected officials and others interested in sustainable tourism
Presenters at the event will include: Kip Bergstrom, Executive
Director of the RI Economic Policy Council; Robert Leaver, of New
Commons, Providence; Ethan Kent, Vice President, Project for Public
Spaces, New York City; Professor Daniel R. Fensenmaier of Temple
University, Philadelphia; Patty West, Coordinator of Ecological
Monitoring & Assessment, Northern Arizona University; and Louis Raymond,
Board Member, Southside Community Land Trust in Providence.
The forum will address topics including: The Art & Science of
Place-Making; Creating Sustainable Destinations Through Place-Making;
Technology Innovation in Marketing for Sustainable Destinations;
Sustaining the Community Experience Using the Local Flavors; and
Sustaining the Community Through Urban Agriculture.
Forum sponsors are: The Sustainable Tourism Planning & Development
Laboratory, Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, RI Economic Policy
Council, New Commons, Salve Regina University, Project for Public Spaces
and the RI Economic Development Corporation.

About the Sustainable Tourism Lab
The Sustainable Tourism Lab is a tourism planning and development
project based in Blackstone River Valley, Rhode Island. It focuses upon
place-based tourism through an education platform concerned with
supporting whole communities through creative and innovative sustainable
geo-tourism practices.
Though the Blackstone River Valley is the primary study area, the
Sustainable Tourism Lab is also home to a global network of members
seeking to understand and apply new approaches to sustainable tourism.
